  • Novel Writing Competition (Write the World), First Place"Ankh" - December 1, 2017

    • “ 'Ankh – life, eternity,' begins this beautifully crafted piece by Soo Young. The line reminds me that a story’s beginning is a promise to the reader—a promise of characters and ideas, language and change. Ankh promises us a glimpse into history and time. Not an easy task to pull off. But from that first line—controlled, staccato—I had no doubt that Soo Young would deliver.(Guest Judge, YA Author Cath Crowley)

    • " 'Ankh' is rich with sensory detail, visual and tactile, from the millennias-old bas-reliefs and hieroglyphs in a museum to the poverty and garbage of Cairo’s back streets. The sun-and-shadow chiaroscuro of ancient high civilization and modern squalor is obvious, but what I really remember about this piece is its enigmatic and lovely last line, evoking the immensity of time and some impassive, overseeing, Godlike witness." (Contest Judge, Tim Kreider)
